What should a person know about the VA and Social Security Programs?

First, both Social Security and VA pay disability benefits but each agency has a different criteria and process in determining eligibility.  If a person receives a VA compensation of 100% Permanent and Total rating does not automatically ensure that a person will also receive Social Security disability benefits as well.  As discussed before, the Social Security Administration has its own definition of disability:

  1. “You must be unable to do substantial work because of your medical condition(s); and
  2. Your medical condition(s) must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least one year to result in death.”

If you receive VA compensation, it will not affect your Social Security benefits.
